The PH 4/3 Desk Lamp is part of the great lighting achievements of the 20th century. The 1925 classic was the result of Poul Henningsen’s mission to create gentle lighting and avoid glare. As such, the light source is completely invisible within the shade and the lamp emits a soft downwards glow throughout the room. The light is diffused through several lampshades arranged in a logarithmic spiral, with the bulb at the core. As Denmark’s first expert in lighting theory, the talented Poul Henningsen was continuously experimenting and searching for harmony in lighting. This resulted in his iconic lamp collection, one of the classics of the 20th century design arena.
INFURN produces the timeless design, hand-blown opal glass lampshades and carbon steel stand. The lamp is available in a natural-chromed, dark-chromed or special edition gold finish.
Designer, author, architect and critic, Poul Henningsen was born into an intellectual and upper class family in Denmark, 1894. Famed for his innovative lighting design, Henningsen was also one of the leading cultural figures in Denmark between both World Wars. Inspired by nature and form, Henningsen’s design style was both unique and provocative. He didn’t believe in the mundane and obvious, once stating, ”All political art is bad – all good art is political.” Celebrated worldwide, Poul Henningsen’s work remains within several notable 20th-century design collections, including that of the Metropolitan Museum in New York City. Henningsen was also given the prestigious honour of designing a piece for Tivoli Gardens in Copenhagen.
